Moral Materialism

"Recently I heard talks from two progressive figures who disagree about a lot, but do agree about one thing. First, was Kevin Mattson, author of the excellent new book When America Was Great (about the Cold War liberals of the Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy eras). Second was Clare Short, a minister in Tony Blair's cabinet who resigned over the Iraq War (and now leads what you might call "the Labour wing of the Labour Party"). They both think it's important for liberals to fight against what they see as a rising tide of materialism in Western society. I couldn't agree less."

Matthew Yglesias in The American Prospect argues that liberals must get back to delivering the goods.
