"A Neon-Lighted Slum"

"LA isn’t a place with great respect for history, its own included. Add to that a few earthquakes and a continuing growth beyond anything Chandler could have imagined, and the city of the 1940s can seem as vanished as fedora hats and smoky bars. Certainly anybody visiting Rodeo Drive or Universal Studios won’t find much to recognise in Chandler’s celebrated description of the ideal detective, going 'down these mean streets... neither tarnished nor afraid'. Yet, if you’re willing to step off the tourist track, there’s still plenty to spark off romantic reveries in any Chandler fan."

In a 2009 Telegraph article, James Walton tours Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles.
